Frequently Asked Questions

  • Forest School is a long-term, child-led outdoor learning approach in a woodland or natural setting. It focuses on building confidence, independence, social skills, and a love of nature through play, exploration, and practical activities.

  • Children should wear weather-appropriate clothing they can get dirty in. Layers, waterproofs, and sturdy boots are essential. Hats, gloves, and sun protection may be needed depending on the season. Upon booking an information sheet will be provided with further information.

  • Yes! Forest School is hands-on and outdoors, so children will often get muddy, wet, or messy. This is part of the learning and sensory experience.

  • Activities are season- and child-led and may include den building, nature crafts, tool use,  imaginative play, fire-lighting, and exploring plants, animals, and habitats.

  • We use a risk–benefit approach. We carry out site and activity risk assessments, teach children how to assess risks for themselves, and provide adult supervision. Safe, supported risk-taking helps children build confidence, problem-solving skills, and resilience.

  • No. Forest School is not classroom-style teaching. Learning emerges naturally through play, exploration, and child-led activities.

  • Yes! You’re welcome to bring a packed lunch, snacks and a drink. We do (usually!) provide a fire-cooked snack during the session, too.

  • Yes. Forest School is inclusive and adaptable to different abilities and needs. Our trained practitioners provide support to ensure every child can participate safely and confidently. We are neuro-affirmative.

  • Sessions are held in outdoor spaces. Most have access to on-site facilities and we will let you know if this is not the case. We teach children basic outdoor hygiene and safety skills appropriate to the setting.

  • Children develop confidence, independence, social skills, resilience, and a strong connection to nature. They also learn practical skills including teamwork, problem-solving, and risk management - all in a fun, supportive environment.

  • Yes, we do offer taster sessions. These are designed to give families a feel for our setting, environment, and approach.

However, it’s important to know that one-off sessions don’t fully reflect the true principles of Forest School. Forest School is based on regular, long-term engagement, where children build relationships, confidence, skills, and a deep connection with the natural environment over time. This ongoing process is central to the Forest School ethos.

Taster sessions can be a helpful introduction, but the richest benefits are always seen through consistent attendance across a series of sessions.
